Entering Primary One is a big step for many children. There are many new routines and expectations required to transit successfully. This programme focuses on helping parents better prepare their children with autism for Primary One.
Individual with autism are generally strong in their routines. However, when these routines are used in a rigid manner, it may interfere with their learning in school. These children may also be distracted by things around them that are not essential to their tasks at hand.
At this workshop participants will gain insights into understanding the key strengths and difficulties children with autism face in learning. You will also learn to apply basic strategies that will leverage on their strengths and accommodate their weaknesses.
These include physical organization of work areas and using of visual tracking tools such as work schedules and individual schedules. These strategies are largely based on the work done by Division TEACCH in the United States of America.
Upon completion of the training workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand the learning strengths and difficulties of young children with autism
- Understand key tools and strategies to support learning
- Application of tools and strategies to leverage on the child’s strengths to support his/her learning
Parents and Caregivers:
- Planning to enrol OR have enrolled their child with autism in a mainstream Primary School
- Whose child with autism is currently in lower primary in a mainstream school
