Programme Description

Adolescence, which involves the transition from childhood to adulthood, can be trying both for the adolescent and the parents. Historically, puberty has been heavily associated with the onset of adolescent development and brings about biological, social and psychological changes in the adolescent’s life. Most adolescents will find this a confusing phase of their lives. One can only imagine what it will be like for an adolescent with autism.

This workshop will focus on:

  • increasing participant knowledge and awareness of the needs of adolescents and the issues they face
  • providing participants with skills to confidently engage in discussions with adolescents about puberty and sexuality issues

Participants in this training workshop will also be exposed to key issues in supporting adolescents with autism in coping with changes during their adolescent years.

Learning Goals:

This training programme is designed to empower participants with the knowledge and skills so that they can:

  • develop some practical action steps on what, when and how to discuss and explain to their adolescent child the different changes that occur during the adolescent years
  • craft and apply basic strategies to help their adolescent child cope with these changes as well as sexuality issues like hygiene, modesty, emotions and the cyber safety

Targeted Audiences

Parents and Caregivers caring for adolescents and pre-adolescents with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (at Upper Primary or Secondary Level or Special Education Schools accessing functional academic curriculum)
