Programme Description

Based on the Principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Discrete Trial Training (DTT) is a teaching technique that is built upon behavioural learning principles that teaches skills in small steps.

In DTT, behavior is broken down into discrete steps called a “single teaching unit” or learning trials. Trials are repeated several times with the learner receiving reinforcement for responding correctly. It uses massed trials, discrimination training, reinforcement, and didactic instruction.

DTT is an approach that can be used with students of all ages and may be used to assist students to learn new skills as part of curriculum teaching.

DTT is a particularly useful teaching approach for students who:

  • need a non-distracting environment in which to learn
  • require repeated opportunities in order to learn a skill
  • need to learn skills in small incremental steps
  • have difficulty maintaining learnt skills
