Programme Description

22 September 2020, 5.00pm to 6.00pm
Positive Behaviour Support - Building Capacity in Services (Webinar)

In this presentation, we will define Positive Behaviour Support (PBS), explore its methods, and consider what the implementation of it means for supervisors, teams, and individuals receiving services. “Capacity” will be defined in terms of individuals on the autism spectrum, professionals who provide direct support and people leading and supervising autism services.

A reflective piece of ‘homework’ will be provided that participants can use to explore illustrate capacity around PBS. Through this session, participants will gain an understanding that PBS involves consideration of everyone involved in receiving and delivering good support.

29 September 2020, 5.00pm to 6.30pm
Building Capacity of Effective Leaders in PBS (Coaching Session 1)

We’ll present evidence and discuss our experiences about maintaining effective teams, and the skills leaders & supervisors need to demonstrate in order to be considered legitimate. We look at the evidence about what works best to keep teams creative, focussed, functional, well-supported, and resilient. We’ll consider how supervisors can help craft positive cultures. Participants will gain an understanding of the importance of leadership, how that is defined, what it looks like, and how cultures can be mended or damaged.

06 October 2020, 5.00pm to 6.30pm
Building Capacity of Effective Teams in PBS (Coaching Session 2)

In this session, we will discuss how staff members are active contributors towards efforts in increasing the capacity to provide quality support, and how such an approach cascades into the quality of life of those using services. We’ll explore the role of supervision, co-support, rapport & communication not only in direct support, but in support of each other. We look at evidence for effective teams, and how good person-centred support requires staff to be well supported, able to contribute their expertise, and viewed as valued individuals.

13 October 2020, 5.00pm to 6.30pm
Building Capacity of Service Users in PBS (Coaching Session 3)

In this session, we will define, and discuss the capacity to make decisions and how best to learn, and consider how people using services can influence service goals. We will look at ways of discovering a person’s preferences & choices. We will also define quality of life, and consider how quality of life is not only an outcome, but an intervention. We’ll rely not just on research, but on participants’ experiences. An understanding that quality of life must be measurable and subjective, and that capacity is not fixed, and often not consistent.
